When did you first consider a vocation to the permanent diaconate?
Early at age 22 in the Diocese of Arlington, Va.
What is your favorite part of being a deacon?
The faculties of preaching and teaching. It is a joy to be able to comment on the gospel and Church teaching in our time because it enhances my faith and hopefully benefits the people I am trying to serve.
What would you say to someone considering the permanent diaconate?
It is, at the same time, a great challenge and a great complement to your marriage, work, and family life.
What surprised you the most about the permanent diaconate?
That I no longer voice a personal opinion because it might be construed as the Church’s position.
What is the most joyful revelation you’ve had about the diaconate since your ordination?
Walking in the footsteps and standing on the shoulders of all those deacons who did their best to serve Jesus in his people.
What is your favorite scripture passage?
Psalm 46:10 “Be still and KNOW that God is Supreme!” This always reminds me to get myself out of God’s way and let him “Be.”
Who is your favorite saint and why?
Teresa of Avila because she trusted God and got things done building an order that is prayer at the heart of the Church!
Is there anything else you want people to know about you or the diaconate?
Even though, for me, it has been challenging and difficult for me and my wife, we would not change a thing because our trust in God and his loving mercy has exponentially increased.
