Although everyone may have a different view on the state of the job market, for many, it’s not easy to find that perfect job. And it’s so very time-consuming. COVID has forever changed the workplace, causing many to re-evaluate career decisions and their approach to job hunting.
Here are a few tips to help you navigate this new normal.
Focus your efforts:
It’s tempting to apply to anything and everything when you’re not having any luck, but focusing on positions that are within your wheelhouse or that you are genuinely interested in is always in your best interest. While this is not a guarantee of landing a job more quickly, it is a strategy to help cut down on job hunting fatigue, and it also helps keep your options open if you find yourself stuck in an ill-fitting position.
Get creative:
Maybe it’s not your end goal, but brainstorm what you can do in a freelance capacity with your current skills/industry to help you bridge the gap. Check out local or remote gig work. Connect with others in your community for bartering opportunities; exchanging professional services is a great way to get yourself out there while making ends meet. For example, offer your graphic or web design skills to a business owner in exchange for a gift card or service from their business.
Ask for help:
Ask friends and family if they know of any opportunities that might be a good fit for you. Make it widely known you are looking for employment; ask for advice from a professional whom you respect. That next conversation with a friend or fellow parishioner may be the one that leads to a perfect job opportunity.
Most importantly, pray:
When all else fails, don’t hesitate to share your struggle with God. He invites us: “Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest.” (Mt 11:28) Share your worries and hopes with him and let him know what you need. Trust the Lord to show his providence.
