Bishop Luis Rafael Zarama presided over the Easter Vigil Saturday, April 8, at Holy Name of Jesus Cathedral in Raleigh, marking the culmination of Lent and the beginning of the Easter season.
During his homily, Bishop Luis urged attendees to remember the true meaning of what is celebrated at Easter.
"The church is transformed with bells and songs and light," he said. "But what needs to be transformed is us. We need to experience what we celebrate. Relax your minds, let your hearts be free. Celebrate not with reason but with faith."
Following the lighting of the Paschal candle symbolizing the light of Christ, the Mass included a series of readings illuminating the light and salvation of our Christian Catholic history. The celebration of the sacraments of initiation for new members of the Church took place, marking the beginning of a new journey of faith for those who are joining the Catholic Church.
Bishop Luis pointed to the example of an altar server who appeared to be momentarily lost and out of place during the Mass.
“There are moments when we are lost and confused,” said Bishop Luis. “But it is in those moments when we want to run away that we must remember that he is with us, close of to us. Difficult moments are there to test how much we trust in him.”
