Bishop urges action on extreme proposed abortion bill

Bishop Luis Rafael Zarama encourages the faithful in Eastern North Carolina to speak out against the proposed Women’s Health Protection Act (H.R. 3755), which will be considered by the U.S. Senate next week.

This extreme bill would impose abortion-on-demand nationwide at any stage of pregnancy and virtually eliminate any existing pro-life protections and laws at the federal state and local level. By legislating that healthcare providers and professionals perform or assist or refer women to have abortions, which may be in conflict with their religious beliefs, and requiring employers and insurers to cover the costs of these procedures, this legislation essentially forces all Americans to support abortions here and abroad.

Bishop Luis has voiced his strong opposition to this extreme bill to North Carolina Senators Richard Burr and Thom Tillis.

“In addition to the grave message this legislation sends about how we as an American people value life, it completely ignores the religious freedoms we value so highly,” said Bishop Luis.

“As Catholics, we believe that every person is made in the image of God and should be treated with respect and compassion. This respect for life extends to the unborn. This proposed extreme legislation runs counter to these teachings and beliefs which we hold sacred.”
